Long-lived and easy to propagate (so you can easily share it with friends and family as it grows), it shows off colorful, red orchid-like flowers. With good care, it can live for decades, growing bigger with more and more (and more!) blooms every year in November/December.

Holiday Cacti are easy to care for. Just give it a spot with bright light during the day, water every week or so (as it needs it) and it'll be a happy, healthy addition to your home.

Light Level: Indirect Sunlight

This plant needs to live in a room with at least some natural light. Place it on a table or countertop with windows nearby.

Water Level: Thirsty

This plant can only go 1-2 weeks without water so check on it weekly and add water every time the top two inches of soil dry out.

Schlumbergera hybrids

Native to tropical rainforests of South America, these plants are epiphytes in their natural habitat—meaning they grow on trees and other surfaces, rather than rooting into the soil on the ground. There are a number of species—and hybrids of these species—and they may go by different common names, including Thanksgiving Cactus, Christmas Cactus, and Crab Cactus.

Regardless of the name, Holiday Cacti grow best in medium to bright light. They enjoy being within about 3 to 4 feet of an unobstructed east- or west-facing window. You can supplement with or grow them under plant lights if you don’t have adequate window space. Water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch. Being epiphytes, they hate overwatering. Provide average household temperatures and average to above-average relative humidity levels.

Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact.
